Every year at this time, the BabyCenter project offers an annual list of the most popular names of 2022. This time, the leading name for boys was Jackson, and the winning name for girls was Sophia. What other names for babies were the most and least popular among young parents this year?
According to the BabyCenter website, Sophia is a Greek name meaning “wisdom.” The name has been used repeatedly by members of royal families in Europe (by the way, I wonder what Meghan Markle thinks about it?). The name Jackson means “son of Jack” in Hebrew, writes USA Today.
Both Sophia and Jackson are not new to the list: Sophia is among the top names for the ninth year, and Jackson is sixth.
The changes in the lists of popular names this year were due to the online video game Fortnite (boys began to be named Ramirez 57% more often) and the Kardashian-Jenner family (the name of Kylie Jenner’s daughter Stormi became 63% more popular).

The zen and communion with nature trend also influenced the choice of baby names (66% more girls were named Peace and 31% more boys were named Ocean).
Emerson and Weston closed out the 2018 list as the least popular names. Although the name Emerson is listed in the category for girls, BabyCenter only has the meaning for a boy’s name, meaning “son of Emery.” Weston translates to “west town.”
