What does anticyclone mean?

An anticyclone is an air mass in the form of an atmospheric vortex with increased air pressure in the center and winds moving from the center to the edges. It is noteworthy that unlike a cyclone, winds in the Northern Hemisphere circulate clockwise, whereas in the Southern Hemisphere – counterclockwise.

Anticyclones are also formed due to the collision of warm and cold air fronts. They are most often found in the subtropical and circumpolar regions of the planet. Their movement speed is noticeably lower than that of cyclones (as a rule, up to 40 km/h).

Similarity and differences between cyclones and anticyclones

Both cyclones and anticyclones have an eddy structure, affecting weather changes over large areas. Their life cycle is usually from 3 to 10 days. The key differences between these atmospheric vortices are as follows:

Cyclone (H):

  • area of formation – over the waters of the oceans, except for equatorial latitudes;
  • diameter – 100-1000 km;
  • velocity – up to 60 km/h, in hurricanes and typhoons up to 200 km/h;
  • pressure distribution – low in the center, rises to the edges.

Anticyclone (B):

  • Area of formation – over oceanic waters, in subtropical and circumpolar zones;
  • absence of wind and precipitation;
  • diameter – up to 3000 km
  • pressure distribution – high in the center, decreases to the edges;
  • velocity of motion – up to 40 km/hour.
